Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody

October 19, 2009 - 9:00 pm

61Q936B8fRL._SL160_Michael Rex’s parody of Goodnight Moon has been out for over a year, but this is only its second Halloween. Therefore, I do not feel as completely behind the curve as I should for recommending it. Goodnight Goon has been heavy on the reading rotation for the last week. It is an hysterical parody of Goodnight Moon, with Mummies and Creatures and Bats and Goons and Martians. And just the right touch of scare for (an adventurous) three and up.

1,001 Rules for My Unborn Son

- 4:04 pm

Fathers of sons secretly wonder if their little rascals will end up as big rascals. When Walker Lamond found out that he was going to be a dad he started a Tumblog, filled with sartorial, practical, and solid advice for good living. Though I could call out dozens of great examples, I particularly liked “#390 Eat lunch with the new kid.” Because, let’s face it: we’ve all been the new kid at some point.
The book comes on on October 28. Pre-Order Here on Amazon: Rules for My Unborn Son

ABC 3D Popup Book

September 10, 2009 - 1:32 pm

This beautiful looking book looks like a fun way to talk about letters with the wee ones. In order to avoid the ravages of the younger children, I think I’d have to leave it on that really high shelf reserved for special books to read with an adult.

Book: Robot Dreams by Sara Varon

September 7, 2009 - 8:57 pm

Robot Dreams
is a graphic children’s book (no words) about new friends Dog and Robot, who are separated after a single glorious Labor Day on the beach. Dog tries to find other friends to fill the gap left by Robot. And Robot dreams of escaping his rusty predicament and being reunited with Dog. In the end- well, no spoilers here- let’s just leave it that the story’s final scene is poignant, sophisticated, and affirming all at once. Varon’s Robot Dreams is a wonderfully entertaining story as well as a great starting point to talk about friendships, new and old, with your little ones. Sara Varon’s fun website is here.

Book: Coyote Raid in Cactus Canyon

Jim Arnosky’s Coyote Raid In Cactus Canyon is about peaceful canyon-dwelling animals whose day is interrupted by a group of coyotes. “Ornery and full of mischief”, the coyotes are just looking for trouble. We all know the bullying type. There’s drama, a dash of scare, and a nice resolution. No wonder he’s won all kinds of awards for his books.
His website has loads of fun activities including drawing lessons, songs, links to his videos.
